Compulsive Gambling Addiction, or Disordered Gambling, has become a huge epidemic in our nation. Currently, 2.5 million adults in America suffer from a gambling addiction. Like others, this addiction does not discriminate. Disordered gambling is present across all economic classes, races, cultures and ages. It is also the type of addiction that is easily overlooked because its symptoms are not physically present or noticeable. However, it is a prominent and aggressively progressing issue that needs to be brought to light.
A fact that may be shocking to some, as reported on PBS, is that gambling in the U.S. generates more revenue than movies, spectator sports, theme parks, cruise ships and recorded music combined! The growing prevalence of this addiction can also be attributed to today’s technology. Not only does gambling occur in casinos, but the Internet has made it possible for anyone to take part from the privacy and comfort of their own homes at any time!
To raise awareness in the community, Hunterdon Prevention Resources will be presenting several lunch ‘n learn workshops to help members of the community gain knowledge and better understand the symptoms and stages, as well as the risk and protective factors, of Disordered Gambling. These sessions will also provide facts about the prevalence of the addiction, when and where to seek help for yourself and/or others, and how to assess the symptoms of a gambling disorder.
